A chance to discover places of incomparable beauty within the Picos de Europa national park, our visit is centred around the two most rugged valleys in the district, Sajambre and Valdeón.
We take the Cangas de Onís road out of Arriondas and then head into the gorge of los Beyos. We take the old cart-track to Oseja as far as Soto de Sajambre and after visiting some of its most emblematic buildings (the mill and the electricity generating plant) we push on to the mountain passes of Pontón and Panderuedas to reach the valley of Valdeón.
Passing through the villages of Caldevilla and Soto, we spot the two different types of construction of the ‘hórreos’ (or larders on stilts) that exist in the Picos. We visit Posada, home to the town hall of the eight villages that make up the valley of Valdeón, and then pass through Cordiñanes and Llanos to reach the most isolated village of all, Caín.
We leave Posada de Baldeón by a track that drops down from the heights of Pandetrave to Fuente Dé, where the cable car is.
We make a pit stop in the mountain refuge and continue parallel with the path of the River Duje. We cross the plain of Vega del Toro via the villages of Sotres and Tielve before dropping down to Arenas de Cabrales and the main road back to Arriondas.
The activity takes approximately eight hours and costs €50 per person.
The River Cares Route
We pick you up in Arriondas and spend four hours touring the interior of the Picos de Europa national park. We make various stops to tell you all about the countryside, wildlife and local customs.
At 2 pm we drop you in Caín for you to walk through the breathtaking Cares gorge. Four hours later we collect you in Poncebos and we return to our point of departure, Arriondas, for the conclusion of the excursion.
